Did you hear about the guy who was so upset that girlfriends would walk out on him after only a few weeks, time after time, that he devised this strategy? Well, first, he thought, choose a non-smoker, then while she slept, he would stick 7 or 8 very strong nicotine patches on each of her arms, he thought. Then before she woke, he would carefully remove them. He would do this every night for a few weeks, until the day would surely come when she would leave him. A day later, she would experience this incredibly strong craving for something which she would think was a deep and true love for him and return. Can't fail, he thought. |

Obviously the joke is about a misconception of what love is. Selfless love doesn't look for any reward or a desire to possess. In order to enjoy life the joke-protagonist needs to be detached. This doesn't mean he has to be indifferent or uninterested, it means he needs to be unpossessive. Life is a gift for which he can be grateful, not a property to cling to. To be non-possessive is to be free in a detached life in which he would be able to offer thanks and praise. |

Just received a phone call from our daughter, she aked me to pick her up from town later than arranged so she can visit the Citizens Advice Bureau. She closed her London flat up and is staying with us a for while. She is suffering depression and chronic insomnia (for some months) and needs our care. This is the first time she has been out for quite some time and is meeting up in town with a couple of her oldest friends. They suggested she visit the CAB for practical money advice as she is not receiving her full salary but still has to pay bills. |

was on the line the my daughter just now...in this thread actually and she'd gone to the doctors and paid 500 to find out there was nothing wrong with her just ... and so I commented on she paid well for her peace of mind...having said this she replied... "now I have to worry about paying my bills"... and so I replied then... that maybe we cannot pay for peace of mind then........ she laughed |

I like the joke.
And the idea that love is a manifestation of sexual attraction is right off the pages of my old Psych 101 textbook.
Love, to me, is a plane of existence, which could well be called Merging with the Beloved, and which I have visited in meditation.
I was quite willing to die to stay there, and tried as hard as I could, but the request was denied, so to speak. Good thing too, because it is only one facet of The One, and I had much more to see. Probably still do. |
