TOPIC: EMBERS... |
|
|
 |
Posted on May.11.2007 @ 10:58PM EDT by Govindi
When we try so hard to stay on the path, we fail to see the obstacles that prevent us from the true goal. Each day we intend to keep the diligence and focus of our practice. As we go along this path we use compassion to quell the fires of anger and selfishness. If we do not acknowledge these fires, they will continue to burn. Even if they are slow burning embers, the winds will eventually fan them into flames. It can be the ones we love the most, who can burst them into a full raging inferno. The ones that hold the mirror in front of your face. The ones who have got to push you, prod you, ridicule you, embarrass you into a place that you thought was in control. As we try to count these steps forward, we continually realize how far we “haven’t” come on this journey. As the fires burn, we find ways to starve the flames. Starving them back to just embers again. The focus should be for us to completely extinguish those burning embers. Just as we “think” they are out, up comes the wind again. If we can somehow stop the wind from feeding the flames, before they fully burst again, maybe we can get just one step further to the true goal of our practice. Just knowing that the fire will end, that it is impermanent, can be comforting in of itself. The only problem is how much destruction has happened in the wake of the fire. How much damage we need to undo. How much devestation will those tiny embers potentialy expose. Can it be as simple as a smile? Can it be as easy as humility? Can we be humble in the face of truth?

Be careful of going back. MU
-
Two monks were once travelling together down a muddy road. A heavy rain was falling. Coming around a bend, they met a lovely girl in a silk kimono and sash, unable to cross the intersection.
"Come on, girl," said the first monk. Lifting her in his arms, he carried her over the mud.
The second monk did not speak again until that night when they reached a lodging temple. Then he no longer could restrain himself. "We monks don't go near females," he said. "It is dangerous. Why did you do that?"
"I left the girl there,: the first monk said. "Are you still carrying her?" |

Silence... the key... to unlock... every door.
Silence, that gives us the space to not react? Like a breath of time before we regret our response or action...
Can we let it be... just listen...
Listen, and dont give fuel to the embers? indifference?

Good advices from Woodsman of you
Just listening and remain silent
Unlocking every door with this key
Self-reliance freed from bondage
The ember of fire is impermanence
Silence is your true companion
It surely will never betray you
Tranquility is never gained outside

Not adding, looking for approval, from others. Being cast out, of blame, alone, as if nothing special had happened, listening to what, was ignored or denied, in us, as in all creation.
Then coming back in, as if each, sound has arisen from before, being heard... the being of one in all, sound, not indifference in time, not preference for order... allowing that to settle, back to, the center, of one. So that one sound, can arise, without a word, being with the unnamed one.

Just as the root of the Buddha's psychological teaching is that we will never find happiness in trying to control what cannot be controlled, the root of his moral teaching is empathy - understanding that all beings want to be happy and that suffering hurts others in the same way that it hurts us. We use our mindfulness practice to notice our feelings and to understand them. Through that we can see very clearly that if we are immersed in tremendous anger, it is great suffering. It is a state of burning, of contradiction and isolation, of separation and fear. We see this relative nature of anger as well as its more ultimate, impermanent, insubstantial, transparent nature. On the relative level, it is painful; it hurts. We can learn not to consider anger as bad or evil. We don't have to reject the anger or reflect or condemn ourselves for it, but rather we can feel compassion for the pain of it. And then we understand that when others are engulfed by anger they are suffering, just the way we suffer when we're lost in that state.

A compassionate attempt to stop runaway emotion at its zenith can be very difficult. Constantly being 'Mindfull', especially at the onset of such emotions, can help to extinguish these 'feelings' while they're still embers.
It's hard to stop a speeding locomotive, but maybe you can reason with the engineer before the train gets up to speed. |
