One day Yao-shan Wei-yen (750-834), one of the well-known Chinese Ch'an master, was asked by the host of the monastery to give his sermon to the assembly who for a long while was expecting his teaching. Yao-shan said: "Strike the bell."
TOPIC: WHAT IS ROLE DO MANTRAS PLAY IN ZEN BUDDHISM?

In various forms of Buddhism, I have found that mantras play differing roles. In Shingon it has a more esoteric use. What is the purpose of mantras in Zen? Are they purely for our purposes or as a means to communicate with Bodhisattva?
......it is just tools afterall, actually we don't need mantras (though it may help) to help purifying our mind...even the breathing phenomena that under obervation will everntually be letting-go...when our mind is still, everything seem to be at auto-mode...
As mantras for communcation purpose, I am not sure... I think it may help give one confidence or encouragment for asking external forces to give blessing or help such like those who believe & pray for GOD's or GODS' HELP.
You can buy, steal or even read books on it. All about mantras. Like your mantra and that guy's mantra - and the other guy's mantra - they all know who I'm talking about because they go on about telling everybody else the same stuff over and over and over and they can't shut up with the mantras.
