→→→→ vertical line TOPIC: COWS' MINDS ARE PRETTY BLANK
vertical line Posted on Sep.07.2007 @ 10:55AM EDT by stephen

Is realizing emptiness the same as having a blank mind, free from all thoughts?

No. When emptiness is directly realized, the mind is free from thoughts and concepts. However, just removing all thoughts from our mind -- peaceful though it may be -- is not the realization of emptiness. After all, cows' minds are pretty blank -- they do not have many conceptual thoughts -- but they haven't realized emptiness! Realizing emptiness involves first understanding what things are empty of -- inherent existence -- and then realizing that inherent existence is a hallucination that has never existed at all. Ven. Chodron

vertical line easy for you to moo, but hard to undo

Before enlightenment I'm sure that everything gets kind of ugly. And that is the reason we are here, alive, to cosmically/physically/emotionally deal with all suffering.
