When Dogen Zenji spoke of open eye meditation, did he actually mean the eyes were fully open or was he referring to the eyes being half-open/half-closed?
I don't get that either. From what I read, Dogen equates sitting with enlightenment - probably something to do with knowing when you're snoozing and when you're not - but it isn't that simple. as anyone who can see through the eyelids will testify, and it sure beats open eye surgery.
