TOPIC: THICH NHAT HANH IS HUNGRY... |
|
|
 |
Posted on Jan.13.2008 @ 11:15AM EDT by Teweret
Hello there!
This will be my first message here, so I hope you like it.
On this site, I read that Thich Nhat Hanh on one hand wants to go back to pure Buddhism as the Buddha taught, while on the other hand he wants to embrace Christianity. Now why does he want to do that? I mean, can you eat soup with a fork, or mix oil and water??? The way I see it, Thich Nhat Hanh has blinded his eyes with mud: His breath blows-away the dust from the diamond, while his hands spray water over the cross. So what you get is one muddy river...
People will lose direction in this and get lost, even more than they already are. But I think Thich Nhat Hanh means well. He feels he has something new to say; he wants to evangelize and spread the word. But if there's nothing you can do, what can you do? He is hungry, because he is eating his soup with a fork. I would like to tell him: Be still, until you have something new to say, something we never heard before...
kensho, Nio

I Have Learned So Much
I Have Learned So much from God That I can no longer Call Myself
A Christian, a Hindu, a Muslim, a Buddhist, a Jew.
The Truth has shared so much of Itself With me
That I can no longer call myself A man, a woman, an angel, Or even a pure Soul.
Love has Befriended Hafiz so completely It has turned to ash And freed Me
Of every concept and image my mind has ever known.
~Hafiz

Well, I had this Christian friend. Much occult fun with him. Very
receptive to Osho tarot cards and shit, spiritually open minded. One day
he was hinting of showing me the power of jesus god whatever. And left
the room while I lay on the couch. Shortly afterwards I suddenly felt
this warm and ecstatic feeling, right out of nowhere. Was quite good
and I felt like giggling. Could vividly imagine my friend in the
vicinity going and all out effort in pray, tong speaking and the lot of
it. Then he came in with a somewhat curious/ special smug look on his
face. He did not mention anything thou.. as I remember. And me? Still
pretending to be reading my magazine, telling nothing.. More between
heaven and earth, but I wont go Christian for that reason:) |

For someone like Thich Nhat Hanh, the similarities between Buddhism and Christianity are more important than the differences. That's not a fork he's eating his soup with, it's a spork. |

I am sorry gebhart099 but I don't think you can do anything with Christianity as it is today: as flexible as concrete. It's all dogma, while it used to be gnostic. That's what Jesus taught his 12 disciples, as we can read in the Nag Hammadi scrolls.

kensho, Nio " ......... Logically, I can't reconcile Christianity with Buddhism. However, just because you are I aren't capable of reconciling the two belief systems doesn't mean that someone else, such as T.N. Hanh or others in this forum, can't . I'm not familiar with the Nag Hammadi scrolls. What are they? |

Strangely, it seems the above film can only be viewed in the uk - part 3 of the 3 part 'Extreme Pilgrim'. Part 1 - Cha'an Buddhism; [China] Part 2 - Hinduism; Part 3 - Early Christianity [Egypt: The Desert]. At some point, they may appear on youtube or google video.
However, an earlier series of films which look at Gnosticism and the Nag Hammadi scrolls can be seen here:

On this site, I read that Thich Nhat Hanh on one hand wants to go back to pure Buddhism as the Buddha taught, while on the other hand he wants to embrace Christianity. Now why does he want to do that?
I figure that he'd rather take the common ground the two share and the truths they both espouse ad use them to build peace between individuals' hearts rather than allowing pride and selfishness to strengthen the man-made walls of "religion" that separate us. I applaud him for it. |
