TOPIC: NEED HELP |
|
|
 |
Posted on Jan.29.2008 @ 11:44PM EDT by A_Pict
I know not of any other way to ask for this, therefore:
If there are any of you living in Idaho (U.S.) - particularly in the S.E area of the state, could you contact me?
I wish to learn more about Zen Buddhism, however, I feel I can only truly learn from a practitioner, not simply from a book.
I was referred to Buddhism by a Wiccan Priestess. I am disturbed by what she told me. I am on a search to find answers.

Don't be disturbed; be disturbing. A disturbance in the space-time continuum, bending that light. |

You might start with these people.
http://www.sravastiabbey.com/index.html The Abbey is on 240 acres near Newport, Washington. It is about one hour north of Spokane, Washington and one hour north of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho |

Are you connected to the internet, like that practitioner, boredom incarnate? Or do you wish to succeed through failure? |

I'm not sure what you mean.
I do have internet access, yes.
Otherwise, I would not be replying to this post :)
Failure? I am no stranger to failure yet, I do not understand how one can succeed through failure.

If that's what you think, what kind of help do you think is needed? And if you know what it is, why don't you provide it? Is it because you're so cute, you're not cute? |

I don't mean to sound rude. I am sorry that it came out that way, and I believe Stephen answered her in the proper manner. I respect all forms of Buddhism very much, but I truly believe there is a time and a place for cryptic thinking / speaking, and it really didn't sound like it was this time. How would you feel if you were truly searching for an answer to something, and not familiar with any forms of Buddhism, and a bunch of people started talking cryptic? I don't think it would help you much, and that really isn't the way to spread Buddha's message to someone who might be suffering.
Please keep the conversations going, and again I am sorry if my message sounded harsh.
May all beings find an end to suffering... |

It seems to be the truth that there are those among us who are constitutional incapable of offering compassion. Their little minds are rapped to tight. Why they hang out on this web site is beyond me. MU |

Incidentally, I agree, I have no idea whatsoever why the stephen poster keeps on keeping on with all his negative BS and his followers and borrowers. One answers someone in a helpful manner and depending on who the stephen poster thinks you are, he will either tell you that you don't know what you are talking about, or merely insult you - and he can do both at the same time because he is bored and has a resistance to existence. |

Lehish, I like your style... Rustic... no offence, but not so much. I am not sure if your trying to help someone here? Or just trying to sound like a big bad zen master, but I got to say, neither of them are working too well for you. The greatist words can be heard sometimes by not saying anything. |

Quote: "Perhaps the original poster might care to explain what it is exactly that the Wiccan priestess said which is so disturbing, specifying what help is needed. The priestess told me my deceased grandfather is acting as my spirit guide. She described details about him that she couldn't possibly have known. She described things about myself she couldn't possibly have known. She opened my eyes to a few things about myself. It was she who suggested I look into Buddhism for the purpose of calming my mind. My religious experiences are varied. For the last few years, I labeled myself an Atheist. Views change.
I read the forum regularly and have enjoyed reading the sections written by Chon Tri. I am a bit puzzled by the "cryptic" messages but, perhaps, my mind isn't clear enough to comprehend.
The Svravasti Abbey link is helpful. A lot of good information there. I enjoy listening to Thubten Chodron. She explains things clearly.
I bought a couple of books at Barnes & Noble the other day. "Buddhism for Beginners" by Thubten Chodron. "Zen Meditation In Plain English" by John Daishin Buksbazen.
I still have a long way to go, but I'm getting there - one footstep at a time.
By the way, I'm a 'he' not a 'she'. No worries :)

Thubten Chodron is a wonderful speaker. I am very insteeped in the Tibetan tradition of Buddhism. She has a lot of good clear answers. The cryptic messages "usually" come from elightened masters to break their pupils out of ordinary thinking and to direct the subconcious mind toward enlightenment. In my opinion it is not in the best interest of a newcomer looking for some basic steps and answers to have crypic messages thrown at him. That is confusion, not enlightenment.

Quote: "Thanks. Interesting. Now, spirit guides - how does your deceased grandfather's spirit guide you? Were you unaware of his 'presence' before the Wiccan priestess told you things about yourself?" ......... Actually, I'm not entirely certain. I had asked the priestess why he was acting as my spirit guide when he has a daughter who is dying and needs him more than I do. The answer I got back was that I was the most disturbed.
I'm not certain if he attempted to make his 'presence' known to me. I drive his car and I think maybe he may have had some input into how I maintain it.
The weird thing is, she described his physical appearance in striking detail - even the hat he always wore. She knew about his physical ailments - some, of which, were unique. She even described him as having a smell of pipe tobacco around him. He smoked cigars that did smell a lot like pipe tobacco. I never, at any time, revealed any of this information to her beforehand.
Shortly after my conversation with the priestess, my mother had a dream about me hurting my hip - badly enough that I needed to go a hospital. The dream was so vivid to her, she emailed me and asked if it were true. It isn't, however, my grandfather fell and broke his hip shortly before he died. Was he communicating to me through her? I don't know. It does, however, seem pretty coincidental.
According to the priestess, spirit guides cannot influence anything in the physical realm, but they can influence the mind - if the mind allows it to happen.
I'm not certain what to think about all of this, but I'm open to the possibility that it may be real. What do I do with it? Move on, I suppose, and take it as a sign that something needs to change.

This is all nice, but mulling over it is to spin in circles.
Who are you?

Quote: "Quote: "Who are you?" .........
Good Question.

The questions, the need for help, are themselves the answers because each one of us is a living question with our own theology - simple and nothing obscure or cryptic about it. Learn 'about' zen and meditation techniques by all means but don't become bogged down with dogma, rules, priests and isms.
Wicca, a kind of composite nature religion, is an interesting (pragmatic) mishmash of ancient and modern methods to achieve something - usually a kind of control over the environment - "as above, so below"; "as within, so without". In my shamanizing days with wiccans and witches I believed myself to be like a kind of arbiter of karma, returning 'bad wishing' to its source, creating spells of protection, amulets and talismans, performing healing ceremonies, et al. I witnessed on many occasions, 'spirits' influencing directly, the physical realm. I worked with elementals - faerie - who require offerings in order to be bound to a shaman's 'power'. This kind of work has many similarities with zen, insofar as the practitioner is empty when 'working'. However, this kind of work also lends itself to abuse by egomaniacs, and charlatans but generally, being receptive to 'spirits' is like switching a fluorescent light on in a darkened room - they will come to the light in order to take a look at you - what you pay attention to, will eventually pay attention to you.

Ghost, demons and spiritual guides.
These are things which one will run into from time to time during meditation and reading the Dharma. I have no opinion on their realm of reality. I choose to ignore them. They are of little importance. They are to be expected and are not very special. They can only affect you if you allow them to. They are a distraction, do not be distracted. MU

You forgot the angels, don't forget the angels, oh, and the gods. It is because Shakyamuni did not ignore the gods, that there's a 'dharma to read'. |

And I thank you, as well...
I'm learning to think for myself again...
It is refreshing...
I still have demons, but I'm now recognizing them for what they are and have given them names. In time, they will no longer control me.
In time...
Running around in circles does get boring after a while...

Then be a spirit not a ghost then, sorry to say but, boooring. Don`t listen to him, demons are quite fun to play with! Just use common sense! Stay within the protective area and abeid by their rules, and you`ll be fine. Just remember to never accept any gifts or presents from them, they are not free!. And be careful when encountering satan, he can be quite grumpy, but remember to ask him for you`re death-day and other curiosities when encountering him! So off you go, catch you`re self self some spirit tonight!:) |
