TOPIC: FEAR OF REALISING THE ONENESS OF BEING... |
|
|
 |
Posted on Mar.13.2008 @ 07:22AM EDT by -Agape-
Hi guys,
I have been getting glimpses of the oneness of being through my studies of Buddhism, Hinduism and psychedelic followers. I have actually had sharp glimpses into the onesness, and realised the Hindu notion of I being God. Sometimes it feels wonderful but other times I get really afraid. I often fluctuate between feeling wonderful about this and having terrifying bouts of nihilistic pessimism. Its as if my mind knows that the natural state of being is bliss yet my ego is fearful of taking the 'leap of faith' as I get sudden pangs to the effect of 'what if I accept this and think I am God and cease to play by the rules of 'society' and do something crazy'; things like that.
I understand this 'rationally' as merely my ego clinging for security yet the fear still does not abate and I have as yet been unable to 'take the leap' for extended periods as I get fearful and seek solace in the security of my ego once again.
As I think about it more, if I were to accept this notion fully, then if the Oneness was me, then rather than suddenly becoming cut off from others and want to do something silly which would incur my (ego) to be persecuted, I would instead feel as though everything was me and thus feel more in tune and connected with others and the whole world than ever before and thus there would be no 'me vs them' just one being.
All the same Im still trying to figure this out so if some others could help me along in my thoughts it would be nice, thanks.

Hi guys,
I have been getting glimpses of the oneness of being through my
studies of Buddhism, Hinduism and psychedelic followers.
who? what is "I" made of?
I have
actually had sharp glimpses into the onesness, and realised the Hindu
notion of I being God.
having a glimpse of to what-"you"-already-are?
Sometimes it feels wonderful but other times I
get really afraid.
says who?
I often fluctuate between feeling wonderful about
this and having terrifying bouts of nihilistic pessimism.
exactly. these feelings come and go-- if fireworks of enlightenment come dont take it personally, if you stub your toe and scream dont take it personally. experiences are phenomenal and have no effect on what-you-are-when-you-are-not.
Its as if my
mind knows that the natural state of being is bliss yet my ego is
fearful of taking the 'leap of faith' as I get sudden pangs to the
effect of 'what if I accept this and think I am God and cease to play
by the rules of 'society' and do something crazy'; things like that. I understand this 'rationally' as merely my ego clinging for
security yet the fear still does not abate and I have as yet been
unable to 'take the leap' for extended periods as I get fearful and
seek solace in the security of my ego once again.
what is "mind"? there is no such thing. ego isnt real--why make it leap over anything?
As I think about it more, if I were to accept this notion fully,
then if the Oneness was me, then rather than suddenly becoming cut off
from others and want to do something silly which would incur my (ego)
to be persecuted, I would instead feel as though everything was me
and thus feel more in tune and connected with others and the whole
world than ever before and thus there would be no 'me vs them' just one
being.
that's how it already is whether "you" like it or not.
All the same Im still trying to figure this out so if some others could help me along in my thoughts it would be nice, thanks.

its ok to think.
pay attention for the attention is the mind.
control your mind.
dont stop your thoughts. observe your thoughts. they come from you.
these ideas of having no mind are false.
PAY ATTENTION ! |

Probably what you have been experiencing is known in Buddhism as "Kensho".
Suggest you do some reading on that. It could happen to you many times .
I remember once I was having Kensho and a friend asked if I was one with the universe, I guess because of my faraway gaze. I answered, "Man, I am the universe." But the feeling went away and I was quite normal again, for a while. |

Probably what you have been experiencing is thought. Life without thought (no thinker, no mind, etc etc) is the living state. |

The imagination carries more truth than the conscious mind.
Even working with your hands, this here, is more honest than the desire to fill the senses.

We can't know when the senses are functioning without translation, without the interpreter of thought, the middle-man brain reactor, desire or (culturally conditioned) imagination, because then there would be no knowledge that they are sensations. |

Einstein said, "Imagination is more important than knowledge."
I doubt that he meant that in a Zen Buddhist way, but it fits. |

Agape, trying to give all this a sense is in fact spoiling it. Oneness is just another concept. What you call glimpses into oneness get spoiled when you start working on it. We tend to go from diversity to oneness, following by nothingness and arriving again at diversity as it is. But let us drop these concepts. Trust your own experience and don't try to make it into a theory. |

I know who really is, and we are all THAT, so I know who I really am, since there is nothing else. And I know who you really are too. But go with your own experiences on that, as I will with mine.
The little ego-self that I know as me is just a puppet for the Buddha that really is. Just because you are only a character in the play doesn't mean you can't enjoy it.
I'm fine with that. |

Oh, you know what Shayne, I think I responded to something you didn't say.
A friend of mine told me why people go off their medication. He said, "When I'm on my medication, everyone likes me but I don't like myself. When I go off my medication, no one likes but I like myself. And also, when you have been on your meds for a while going off of them is like getting high. Its like you have superhuman powers." |
