TOPIC: THOUGHT RESTRAINT? |
|
|
 |
Posted on Apr.14.2008 @ 09:46AM EDT by glorymind
"To attain enlightenment, it is not necessary to abandon family life, quit your job, become a vegetarian, practice asceticism, flee to a quiet mountain top, or enter a ghost cave of dead Zen to entertain your subjective imaginings. If you have been practicing quiet meditation but your mind is still not calm and free when in the midst of activity, this means your haven't been empowered by your quiet meditation. Furthermore, if you have been practicing quietude just to get rid of agitation, then when your are practicing quietude just to get rid of agitation, then when your are in the midst of agitation, the agitation will disturb your mind just as if you had never done any quiet meditation.
When you are studying Zen, as you meet with people and deal with situations, never allow bad thoughts to continue. If a bad thought arises, immediately focus your attention and root the thought out. If, however, you just follow the thought unhindered, this will not only make it impossible to have any insight into your own true nature it will also make you a fool.
Good and bad come from you own mind. But what do you call your own mind, apart from your actions and thoughts? Where does your mind come from? If you really know where your own mind comes from, boundless obstacles caused by your own actions will be cleared all at once. After seeing that, all sorts of extraordinary possiblities will come to you without your seeking them."
Chan Master Dahui Zonggao
So, root out thoughts that your mind thinks are bad? Isn't 'bad' something that should be rooted out?

Many question are not answered with short verbiage. The question of "good" and "Bad or evil" in terms of Buddhism is one of them. Please see http://www.urbandharma.org/udharma5/goodevil.html |

Can one control the thought at all? Or, can one possibly just watch (note or catch ) the momentary arising intention or instant-thought ? What is thought actually? Thanks! |

There is the 'preconscious mind' that prepares related memories for you and makes them available for invocation.
Research on 'thought suppression' has conflicting conclusions, but usually suggests that it doesn't work.
Control being an illusion in a material sense (we are composite creatures). But I'm not sure what that means in 'real' terms.
You live, you learn.

Thinking is pernicious. Voilition should be absent and life accepted as it is, free of any judgement in terms of good or bad, fault or blame. As a story goes, good luck bad luck, who knows! Restraining the mind is using thought. And the mind is too devious and cunning to be overpowered.Forgiveness of the judge, victim and villian in our minds and Silence (watching the breath) is how I believe we can attain, naturally. |

silence is a friend that never betrays. it's also golden. not the silence where we suffer and pursue the idea of 'poor me'. that's vanity, self glorification. thinking without choiceless awareness is entertainment. and when the mind is noise, then we are asleep. and we'd like to be awake...to the eternal moment |
