One day the Buddha was asked by the naked ascetic Kassapa:
-Master Gotama, is suffering created by oneself?
The Buddha replied:
-Not so, Kassapa.
-Then, is suffering created by another?
-Not so, Kassapa.
-Then,... continue...

→→→→ vertical line TOPIC: THE ANSWER
vertical line Posted on Sep.17.2008 @ 06:40AM EDT by immortal 1

Sorry, I do not have an answer.

I certainly do not have 'The Answer'.

I would say though that I have been much happier (ie: less suffering) since I stopped believing that there is an answer and stopped looking for one.

the answer LOOKS for the answer. to know ones own mind and what it does is the answer.

or else you would still be looking.

L plates is what you have to display on a car whist you are a learner driver here in OZ.

You can only drive accompanied by a fully licenced driver at that point.

Yes we are all familiar with the 'mirror' analogies.  Who's the prettiest of them all?  Why shayne, of course !!  Hard to see through all that dust though.

Oneness is a great revelation on an intellectual level.  Fun for the mind to play with.

As an understanding it is much more simple, and overrides everything else.

So you're a drop in the ocean?  How much of you is drop, and how much is ocean?

Why is that so much to ponder?  The more you make of it, the less you are a drop and the more you are a drip.

vertical line "I would say though that I have been much happier (ie: less suffering) since I stopped believing that there is an answer and stopped looking for one."

I can correlate this claim with something that I experienced personally. As long as I was concerned about finding a "secret answer" to the mysteries of the world and universe everything was full of contradictions and difficulties. But when I came to realise that there is nothing to understand, then it all became very easy. This was a painful path to take emotionally but well worth the walk.

There's not much to be said after that realisation. It's sad but I am not able to tell much of the progress after that point. Many have tried on this forum but fail every time. Some try to be clever and speak with metaphors, koans and poem -like format. This does not help since that only obscures clear thought but does not help taking the leap to the area where words and concepts are not useful.

Best wishes,
Z

.........

I read many accounts of other's awakening before experiencing my own.

These accounts meant nothing to me.  They made no sense.  I could see nothing in them.  At best they appeared to be psychotic episodes.

But my meditation was really great.  I loved it, especially where I would gain insight into the nature or behavior of others and gain a competitive edge in office politics or infighting.  It was often prophetic, and paid off.

Then I had my own awakening, and all those other accounts made perfect sense.  Then it was ambition that made no sense, and was more like a psychotic episode.  So I dumped my 'career', dumped my cheating wife, and moved to the country where I have been very happy.

I guess its all a matter of perspective.  I have no explanation for awakening, yet it is the simplist thing ever.

And no matter how many times I have tried to put it into words it means nothing except to those who already have 'understanding'.  I'm surprised there are so many trying to sell it, because I can't even give it away.  Like Gangaji who says she is "selling water down by the river".

vertical line A psychotic episode. That's what my awakening felt like. I always had something going on, and I read a lot looking for answers. Then family life got rather intense and I thought I was losing it. I sat rocking back and forth on the sofa with tears running down my face. I sat like that for hours. Then gradually I began to feel better, even amazing. Something had definitely taken place. It was another ten years before I had the courage to get divorced and explore things further.

vertical line Yep, we're all equally right in our words. But what is that urge to utter words stemming out of the nothingness? The undescribable nothingness that we're trying to embrace, describe and trick others into brief moments of realisation?

For what is a koan if not a trick for the mind?

It takes time to wind down after 'understanding'.

Gangaji said, when helping me to adjust, that it is like when a fan is turned off.  The blades keep turning for awhile, even though there is no more current going to the motor, until they eventually wind down.

I went to work the next day after 'awakening', and thought I would just go on as if nothing had happened.  About 10am in the morning one of my co-workers sat down at another co-worker's desk and said, "Well, how are we going to deal with the new Don?"

I said, "What new Don, there's no new Don."

And he said, "Oh yes there is!!"

But it was still another 3 years before I actually left the 'career', and the cheating wife, and became a Zen Monk full time.

the answer lies in NOT looking for an answer.

Not really, but I would say that it is good to remember that the things that you have also have you.

In our present economic turmoil, I try to remember that a good baseline is to know that you can live in the woods, away from society, like a monk of old, and that the rest of  your life is an option that you are currently exercising.

I bought an acre in the woods some time ago just to have such a place to go.  The property taxes are less than $100 per year.  If all else is lost I can go there.  If that is lost too, I will just have to make my way into the wilderness and hope for the best.

So if I have an answer it would be, "The less you need, the more you have."
