vertical line "Why are we so ambitious? Why do we continually seek
to make the "I" amount to something? "I have to be good,
I have to be right, I have to be loving, successful, heroic,
modest, spiritual, etc." Why are we so concerned with the
future and the past?

Honesty is a rarity where motives are concerned because
it takes enormous energy and courage to look at ourselves.
We may find it too disturbing to see the genuine motives
behind our actions, so we cleverly conceal them behind a
multitude of masks: humility, generosity, virtue, respectability,
to name a few. Revealing the truth behind these
masks, we fear, might thwart the gratification of our
ambitions. We want to be successful to glorify our beliefs,
our ideals, or ourselves; this only serves to widen the gap
separating us from each other."

I will try to explain it one more time.  Needing nothing, wanting nothing, being nothing, is the path to happiness.

You are nothing.  You do not even really exist.  In an endless ocean of energy, you are just a temporary happenstance of molecules and atoms lost in an existential mist that you call reality.  In truth, you are an Ape, of the genus Hominadae Homo Sapiens, which in latin means 'smart monkey', on a planet so small, orbiting a sun so small, in a universe so big, that it is laughable to think you matter at all.

As an energy construct, you matter about as much as what was on TV just before you changed the channel.  Like that, you are just the current picture produced by that energy, before it changes into something else.

If you want something, then you need something to make it happen.  So without wanting there is no needing.

If you need something, then it must be important, and therefore it makes you important.

So if you back track to your origin by not needing, and therefore not wanting, then you can get back to being nothing, and the presure will be off of you.  Then you can be happy.
