"But," asked Vaccha persistently, "when one who has this emancipation of mind
(freed from self) dies, where does he go, where is he reborn?
The Buddha replied:
"The word 'reborn' does not fit the case."
"Then he is not reborn?"

A terrible tooth ache. Sip of a hot drink. Another hit of pain.

Excellent opportunity. Good practice.

A call to dentist.

vertical line Mmm, mmm, spiritual healing. Here, the opportunity is in change (for the better).

But what if it was like a fly that never went away. A nuisance and nothing else. Waiting for a single moment of relief, but it's always there.

Personally, I don't think everything can be salvaged. ;)

vertical line This is going to be like a big fat fly that doesn't die easily because it seems I won't see the dentist for a month or so.

So I get a golden opportunity with pain.

Good you can be optimistic.

Had a cut on my lower lip once that would keep re-opening when I ate. It was very painful to re-experience many times, and, once open, contact with most foods did not help. I missed enjoying eating.

In the end I got annoyed and blamed evolution, preferring that it had made me as a sphere: that is what I learned.

It means the point of life is genetic engineering (get those pain receptors out!). But the me of tomorrow is not the same as the me of today... So I might as well get rid of him now? ;) I have no idea what I'm saying.

vertical line What's wrong with association? Is dissociation better? What's wrong with attachment? Is detachment better? Contradictions. Better is just as worse.

There's not much special in the world and no real contradictions except in one's own deluded mind-barrel-full-of-monkeys.

Thus, there's nothing much more going on than pain in the tooth and that's good practice.

Really, it seems very simple.

Dissociation isn't detachment.  Nothing to do with better or worse, right or wrong.  It may seem very simple.  Really it is very simple,  you have a bad tooth and you like to tell how much it hurts.

vertical line Use of an object in the technique of delayed gratification - press your tongue hard up against the tooth which hurts, keep provoking it to generate more pain, when you finally desist and relax your tongue you will experience a brief painlessness of bliss.

The previous post contains traces of irony - use of the word bad to describe a tooth in the sense of diseased, injured, causing pain which you say you perceive as good [for practice].

Do not avoid suffering or close your eyes before suffering. Do not lose awareness of the existence of suffering in the life of the world. Find ways to be with those who are suffering, including personal contact, visits, images and sounds. By such means, awaken yourself and others to the reality of suffering in the world.

vertical line Yes, I agree that suffering exists in many forms and is ubiquitous all around us no matter where we look. However I wouldn't say that all is suffering. I know that some consider life to be constant suffering and therefore the main goal of a human being must be to find a way out of that suffering state-of-mind.

I do not support this ideology. The reason is simple: Not all feelings are suffering. There is much in life to be enjoyed as much as there is to suffer.

Of all emotions I think 'Fear' is the most interesting because it's so difficult to grasp. There's an innate tendency to run or hide when fear is around.

What do you think?

Fear, anger, envy - any afflictive thought is suffering, is paralysing. The thoughts we have about fear are worse than the fear itself - thought-commentaries running like a video in our heads about fear, telling ourselves about fear, strengthening its grip, feeding it, giving it power. When we look straight into fear, seeing it for what it really is - a mixed up mess of thoughts and bodily tension - it disintegrates under a direct gaze - the breakthrough realisation that what was perceived as an obstacle is a great help.

Do not avoid suffering or close your eyes before suffering. Do not lose awareness of the existence of suffering in the life of the world. Find ways to be with those who are suffering, including personal contact, visits, images and sounds. By such means, awaken yourself and others to the reality of suffering in the world.

Sincerely hoping you may have many such pains in the future. ;)
