There was an old woman on the road to Great Mountain (Taizan) [the location of a monastery].

Sometimes a monk would ask which way it was to Taizan, and she would reply, "Straight ahead." The monk would proceed a little, and the old woman would say, "A fine priest, going on like that again!"

A monk related this to Joshu, and Joshu said, "Wait, I'll examine her for you."

Josh went and also asked the same question, and the old woman gave the same answer.

The next day, Joshu ascended the high seat and said, "For your sakes, I've seen that old woman through and through."

Gate is straight.
Deep and wide.
