→→→→ vertical line TOPIC: BECOMING, BEING AND THE ESSENCE OF I
vertical line Posted on Dec.01.2008 @ 06:53AM EDT by zen-zen
Here is a poem that I find refreshing from time to time. It's a poem about one's identity, and also about becoming. It is an excellent presentation about the process of becoming, being, the essence of I, and it's all expressed in words. ----

Who am I?
That is the age-old question
Asked by every man
At one time or another.

Though he looks into a mirror
And recognizes the face,
Though he knows his own name
And age and history,
Still he wonders, deep down,
Who am I?

Am I a giant among men,
Master of all I survey,
Or an ineffectual pygmy
Who clumsily blocks his own way?

Am I the self-assured gentleman
With a winning style,
The natural born leader
Who makes friends instantly,
Or the frightened heart
Tiptoeing among strangers,
Who, behind a frozen smile trembles
Like a little boy lost in a dark forest?

Most of us yearn to be one
But fear we are the other.
Yet we CAN be
What we aspire to be.

Those who cultivate
Their natural instincts,
Who set their sights
On the good, the admirable, the excellent,
And believe they can achieve it
Will find their confidence rewarded.

And, in the process,
They will discover the true identity
Of him who looks back from the mirror.

-Bruce Lee

Did you discover the true identity and essence of the one who looks back from the mirror?

by developing consciousness, you get to higher levels of consciousness
but that is not the way to enlightenment

enlightenment is right here, no matter how rough your taste is

vertical line Hedonistic coulinaristic complexities of the 'me' indeed. So bon apetit is perhaps proper here.

The true identity of the 'I' is so simple. It can be said that it is not at all what one would expect to find when the journey into the essence of 'I' begins.

Actually the process is quite ironic if you think of it this way: Perhaps the motives of an individual are selfish and egocentric to begin with. As the search goes on, the 'I' looks for answers from outside. When the 'I' doesn't find any satisfactory answers from there it may be smart enough to look inwards with introspection. That's usually when the 'I' receives it's first blows towards it's "fortress of reason". If all goes well and the process is allowed to continue, the 'I' is transformed into something more calm and humble.

So, in the end the 'ego' or 'I' that started the inquiry ends up being kicked in the ass by itself.

A smile comes into my face: I imagining itself kicking it's own ass. :)

vertical line Is it better to say that the illusion of 'I' is observed and then put aside? Perhaps.

Would you say that the "I" is completely destroyed then?

The age-old question asked by many philosophists.

Rustic: "Do you understand what you are asking?

Who is asking? Up there is just a poem.

Phenomenal appearances, the observed, occur through the medium of a supposed separate entity, I, the observer. The two sides of that one coin come and go together. The primary undifferentiated field of Energy that tosses the coin, otherwise doesn't know itself.

To discover this for yourself, go back through the I.
