When Yang-shan Hui-chi (807-883), as a young monk, paid a visit to the Ch'an master Hsing-k'ung, there was a monk who asked Hsing-k'ung:
-What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?
To be sincere in everything you do, is to be firm with your Self. Being firm by telling yourself "you're going nowhere" afterwords and during your practice you're "doing nothing."
Your mind is still the same mind your heart beats still the same beat. Just as is, there is nothing to point at, no way to grasp anything and no thing to grasp.
Then the feelings that arise on account of your sights etc. and the perceptions and determinations and consciousnesses that follow. These things have to be seen with right insight and the self view should be destroyed.
Asking - What is it? to no particular thing but an abstract force shows you your quality of attention. Free these qualities for inconceivable realities of Going nowhere, Doing nothing for long periods and see your own Nature.
