One day a girl in geisha house hailed the Japanese Zen master Mokudo by name.
He went inside and discovered that the girl was a childhood acquaintance.
The crops had failed one year in their village, and she had become a courtesan... continue...

vertical line Posted on Jan.16.2009 @ 01:37PM EDT by shaitown04

I have decided to become a Zen Buddhist and learn all I can learn about it. I have books and articles to help me. What else can I do? Put me on the right path because I am doing this alone.

Thanks,

Shakira Coleman

vertical line Is there a right path? And if there is, who will put you on it?  You could click on the links in the menu at the top of this page though, and facilitate an exploration of this site.

vertical line Rather than trying to become something, say a Zen Buddhist, just open your eyes to your true self, your original mind. What are you, to start with? What you have always been, even before you were born? Avoid religious and philosophical concepts.

.........

I disagree. Zen is a way of thinking, among other things, which is exactly what philosophy is.

In my eyes, Zen is about ending your own suffering through philosophical concepts.
-------------------------------------------------

In answer to the original post, i would read the Zen Book, it is full of insight on how to end suffering

vertical line Well, you are right, in a way. Zen has its concepts. But they are mainly just an ambitious effort to open your eyes and show you that it is actually concepts that are causing your suffering. The point is not in these concepts.

Outside of experience you will not find a thing.

Zen is an experience.

vertical line Oh They say that Zen is a Concept! They Say that Zen is an experience!

What a wonderous industry it must be that's built on those concepts and experiences! May the hollywood tremble!

This simple zen fool hasn't come across any concept or experience that would be called with the word zen! Period!

Outside of experience you would not know a thing.

This would encompass whatever your zen knowing might be. It also includes bike riding.

It also encompasses not knowing zen, and not bike riding.

zen is a method of ridding oneself of dogma and creed and beliefs.

some say its a religion.

some say its not.

some say its a vehicle.

i think its all three depending on where your at.

its about accepting reality for what it is compared to what we believe.

Sword always thrusts into itself

Mind explores itself

vertical line Start by forgetting. When you have forgotten everything, including who it was that asked the question, then you will know the meaning of zen "Being human means no meaning, no reason, no choice. But if you attain no meaning, you get great meaning. That is: put down any kind of opinion, any condition, any situation, then your life becomes complete." seung sahn

What others have to say is interesting.

But what is revealed to you in your own meditation is for you alone.

Be on your own path.  Let others walk theirs.  You walk yours.  Share if you wish.  Things shared here may cast a different light on your own meditative experiences also.

Wikipedia, free online encyclopedia, is a good  quick-source of information on Buddhism.

Many of the works offered here on this Zenguide site are good too, and more in depth.

Meditation is at the heart of Zen Buddhism, and it is very personal.
