I have looked into the eyes of dying men, wishing them well, but without malice or mercy.
I felt at those times that we shared a certain understanding of life and death; the shortness of life, the certainty of death.
I could not help them. Maybe they helped me. I felt closer to them than anyone. |

i think that two poems I wrote may be relevant:
a babe looks and new mothers face. new mother looks at babe's face. inside mother compassion is born. Who is the mother and who is the babe?
now, in Lent I begin or end reflection upon the birth of the Jesus Christ. May Mary's womb be full again, May paltry stable make room again, May this be done in your heart, that Christ Jesus of Nazareth
break through from transcendence,
into your heart, devoid of virtue, spiritually poor,
and may you be His mother,
the mother
of Wisdom
and Compassion.
Amen.

Remember years ago being truly afraid for someone being mean to me, truly cared for the person and did not want to see anything bad befall in a cosmic sense from a somewhat superstitious belief of everything we do comes back graciously one way or the other, regardless if I minded or not. Anyway, guess compassion is understanding. Seeing that everybody hurts and really mostly focused on protecting themselves rather than being mean.

In my current understanding , compassion as in Buddhism concept is a condition of being less self ......not resulted by desire or emotions but a reflection of self realization .
Buddhism to me is a process of all being regardless living or non-living and is natural . As in human , Buddhism is a process that will lead into accepting ownselves and ending own existance . Buddhism is a process that involve all experiences , knowing , understanding , discovering own emotions , desire , compassion , love by being awake , by own realization leading to acceptance of ownselves and emptiness .
So as human understand ownselves that is all emotions , desire , love , compassion , anger , hate , ego etc and as he progress into greater realization , his emotions will be decreased .......his emotion of anger , love , compassion , ego will be decreased and the burden of carrying "himself" also decreased ......he will be in a condition accepting he is no special than other being , he will accept all being is same and equal.....he will accept that all being is in their own process leading to himself , he will accept he is same and equal with any human , any animal , any plant , virus , table , pen , rock , water , dirt etc .........he will accept nothing belong to him nor family , material or even his body .........he will understand no special love for family or even himself , he will see himself in others being , see others as himself................as all is one , and one is emptiness ...
So he will treat others , same emotion as himself regardless their nature ......he will carry same emotion for animal , pen, rock same and equal as for his mom ...have same emotion for the virus that attack his body same and equal with his daughter ..........thats my understanding of "compassion" in Buddhism , not resulted from desire , or culture , or knowledge but is a condition of one acceptance / realization ...........
Thks

The compassion of most people is something they possess and they can give it to others. That is egoistic compassion.
When compassion is something that is not your possession but comes as a result of understanding that is true compassion. It is not something you can give.
