So, I live in a small Florida town. The closest place to associate and meditate with others, in a Zen sort of way, is over 50 miles away. I have books, the Internet, my cushion. I have a full time job. How will I find "my" sangha?

Begin with being in nature, and as you sit openly others will come join you to share in the beauty held as in a beginning way into unity consciousness. But there is also a struggle going on, until we match nature with ourselves and see one's self in every touch, turn, and seated bliss - nothing in every hand to take, but only give in the light of loving acceptance. |

Always begin where you are.
If you have questions then you can always come here to ask or go to another website. Zenforuminternational.org is a much more formal space for help. They may be able to find you a center near you.
Anyway, just start where you are now. Join this community of like minded people. Discuss any issues you have and set your schedule to do Zazen.

If you practice, you will be able to distinguish the true meaning of Sangha. Then, you will also know you have found it.
Be careful of the conservators and dictators at ZFI but trust the words of the Buddha. Best wishes,

Why yes, of course I have, good SIr. I've offered nuts, berries, twigs, biscuit shaped cow dung, and strawberry blood. I've offered, to make a long list short, GREED, IGNORANCE & HATE, but they have an aversion to such things. It's like poison to them. Funny, aye?

I guess what you put in .. is what you get out. I use them as a resource to answer questions I may have. Sometimes It is quite fascinating how they pat each other on the back Then there are the times when they bite and scratch like cats and dogs during a fight. And, yet, I still manage to learn. Yeah, funny.

Once on a bivuac, during camoflage drill, a soldier came running into camp, dressed as a tree. The First Sargeant began to dress him down, *Smith, wtf are you doing here? You were stationed as a look out in the woods !*
Smith answered, *Sarge, I know. When the bear rubbed up against me, to scratch himself, I stood fast. And when the wolf hiked a leg and peed on me, I didnt move. But when those two squirrels got in through the hole in my trunk, and I heard one say to the other, *lets eat one now and save the other for later*, that was it and I took off running !!* |

So, so, don`t be so hard on him. I`m sure he`ll ask riverstone for forgiveness now and also apologise in public to all readers of whatever postings he made. And thus in a few years time everybody will have forgotten about this outrageouse scandal so he can start his life over again. |

Sent: Tue Aug 14, 2012 5:18 pm
by Riverstone
"I was not kidding, I really am honored that you were inspired by my words. "
I see in him what I wish for myself.
You on the other hand are a downer. You have a little knowledge and lots of pride. You don't know humility or compassion You wish only to prove yourself better than others
Amazing to have found the different ends of the spectrum here ...hahaha

Oh, I would like to say that I apologize to anyone who may have been offended by my actions. While I was doing it, I knew something was wrong. Then, when it finally came back to be, wow ... such anger from boymonk. You would think I brought down the the presidency or murdered someone ... Hahaha.
Still, I was wrong and really am sorry for the commotion I made here. I took Riverstone's post about emptiness and used it to describe Buddha nature. Now, he asked me if I believe them to be the same. For now, I do. I don't have the actualization yet .. so it is easier for me to lump it together for now. Again my apologies .. truly sorry.

Did you think that you could fool us, Avisitor? I think you will find that we are not so easy as to not be fooled!
Don't ever try to steal Riverstones words again, or there will be hell to pay! You have already wrought incalculable bad karma upon yourself. Do not dare to make it worse!

The only bad Karma to come out if this is that I have made remarks about you. That will unwittingly link your anger to my future life. But, the resulting actions can't be worse than to suffer a fart in an elevator going up to the 40th floor without any stops in between. Hahaha
There is good that came from this. I'll just let you figure that out ... after you get over your anger.

From ZenGuide.com's own stories .. TANZAN AND THE GIRL ON THE ROAD
Tanzan and Ekido were once traveling together down a muddy road. A heavy rain was still falling.
Coming around a bend, they met a lovely girl in a silk kimono and sash, unable to cross the intersection.
"Come on, girl" said Tanzan at once. Lifting her in his arms, he carried her over the mud.
Ekido did not speak again until that night when they reached a lodging
temple. Then he no longer could restrain himself. "We monks don't go
near females," he told Tanzan, "especially not young and lovely ones. It
is dangerous. Why did you do that?"
"I left the girl there," said Tanzan. "Are you still carrying her?"
Muju
.... My question to you is, "Are you still carrying this thing around?" You have become like monkey with his hand on the candy which is inside a jar. He can't get his hand out of the jar to get the candy because he can't let go of the candy. The monkey wants the candy so much that he won't let go of it. And so he will not get the candy. The more you want it the more you can't have it. Learn to let go. Then, you may actually get what you really want.

Quote: "Promise yourself." ......... You just can't let it go ... can you? It is interesting cause you have shown your true nature It is one which is petty and full of jealousy and pride Not saying you're a bad person nor good person Just that you have more to work on than some others here.
I have learned a few things during my time here. This one not being the biggest. All things change ... that is the only thing that seems to be consistent I hope you change and find your way.
The promise is already made. And has been violated. And, the promise is made again ... hahaha Change??

Sorry, you don't understand. This is not the first transgression and probably won't be the last .. no matter how I try not to do it. I sometimes read things which are truly good and wish to pass it on. Sadly, I don't always give credit where credit is due.

boymonk and avisitor were posting on the forum,
a heavy exchange was going on.
Coming down from a bender was Shayne sick with mono and unable to cross infect.
'Come on girl,' boymonk said to avisitor, 'lifting muddy riverstones is dirty!'
avisitor said, 'well I've basically got lodgings at the temple, and another thing....we monks don't go near candy jars - especially ones with nice slim necks - it's dangerous, so why do you do that?'
'Oh, I'm over the candy jar thing' said boymonk to avisitor, 'but you're still clutching that riverstone' |

Please forgive me but I don't remember where I heard this story But, it is an interesting story. Please read:
Monks, of the past, would travel and sometimes stay overnight at a monastery. But, normally before permission to stay was granted, there would be a duel on the Merits of Buddhism.
One night two monks stopped by wishing to stay over night. The abbot asked that they wait in the room while he got someone to help them. The only person available was a person who was slow and had lost one eye when he was younger. The abbot sent him to help the travelers.
The young man, upon entering the room, bowed to the two monks. The monks stood and bow back. And then, one of them put one finger up. The young man put two fingers up. The two monks bowed and walked out.
The abbot seeing the two monks leaving asked what had happened. The monk said that during their duel he held up one finger to represent the one true teachings of Buddha. The young man then put up two fingers to show the dualistic mind. So, they said that after losing that they must leave.
The abbot then went to the young man who was running after the two monk. Asked the young man what had happened. The young man said that no sooner than he had walked into the room the monk was rude and pointed out that he only had one eye. He lifted two fingers to compliment the monk on having to eyes. Then they got up and left. The young man said he was so angry that he was going to beat them up.
You can take it anyway you want .. I just wanted to share that story. Sorry, don't remember who to give credit to ....???

Very well Avisotor, I will tell the story.
PART I
There sits a small village in a desolate land West of the Atlantic. The
village, long self-regarded as an international community even though
all inhabitants are “Westers,” with the exception of one expatriot known
as the Chris, has from the beginning been in the grips of a blight.
Villagers have long know the cause for this blight. It is simple to
deduce. All one needs to know is that a man, or a woman, can’t live on
old mushy astringent pickles. Old mushy astringent pickles are the only
form of sustenance allowed in the village. It’s an OMAP monoculture.
OMAPs are served for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and even desert. When a
visitors learns that OMAPs are the only food allowed they move on, or
worse, they swallow the OMAPs and by decree, smile while swallowing.
Needless to say the population is small and growing smaller with each
passing day.
One day an underground profit arose with an insight. A savior would
come. A messiah from the East would come with a new kind of sustenance.
His voice would ring out over the overlords, drowning out their bitter
fruits (OMAPs). This liberator would be known by the name Riverstone.
The prophesy came true and Riverstone arrived at the village. There were
not many left to greet him, but the few that remained noticed someone
else. A visitor, who’s name is unknown, arrived the same day as
Riverstone. When Riverstone was first offered a OMAP he laughed. He
laughed so loud the earth shook. The great shaking was like an
earthquake and in fact registered 9.873 on the richter scale. All the
pickle jars on all the shelves in the village came crashing down,
breaking into a million peaces. The villagers roared with glee.
Riverstone the magnificent, they praised him.
Now, while all of this was happening the other visitor, who shall remain
nameless, watched Riverstone with jealousy. What was so special about
Riverstone, the visitor thought to himself. I can laugh loud too, he
thought. Maybe not as loud as Riverstone but still, pretty loud. So the
visitor hatched a plan, and it was a good plan, if rather unscrupulous.
Meanwhile, Riverstone had become good friends with a young monk from a
neighboring village. This boy monk knew that there would be some who
would covet the love and affections Riverstone had engendered. He also
knew of an obscure prophesy that a visitor would betray Riverstone in a
clandestine attempt to steal his glory. The boy monk sent a private
message to warn Riverstone.
THE END OF PART I

Everything starts as a proverbial 'mole hill'. Then they escalate. First a little plagiarism, and when that offers satisfaction, next comes murder. And the ultimate result is genocide. Try to keep this in mind. I could be saving the lives of millions. |

Quote: "Quote: "Very well Avisotor, I will tell the story.
PART I There sits a small village in a desolate land West of the Atlantic. The village, long self-regarded as an international community even though all inhabitants are “Westers,” with the exception of one expatriot known as the Chris, has from the beginning been in the grips of a blight. Villagers have long know the cause for this blight. It is simple to deduce. All one needs to know is that a man, or a woman, can’t live on old mushy astringent pickles. Old mushy astringent pickles are the only form of sustenance allowed in the village. It’s an OMAP monoculture. OMAPs are served for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and even desert. When a visitors learns that OMAPs are the only food allowed they move on, or worse, they swallow the OMAPs and by decree, smile while swallowing. Needless to say the population is small and growing smaller with each passing day.
One day an underground profit arose with an insight. A savior would come. A messiah from the East would come with a new kind of sustenance. His voice would ring out over the overlords, drowning out their bitter fruits (OMAPs). This liberator would be known by the name Riverstone.
The prophesy came true and Riverstone arrived at the village. There were not many left to greet him, but the few that remained noticed someone else. A visitor, who’s name is unknown, arrived the same day as Riverstone. When Riverstone was first offered a OMAP he laughed. He laughed so loud the earth shook. The great shaking was like an earthquake and in fact registered 9.873 on the richter scale. All the pickle jars on all the shelves in the village came crashing down, breaking into a million peaces. The villagers roared with glee. Riverstone the magnificent, they praised him.
Now, while all of this was happening the other visitor, who shall remain nameless, watched Riverstone with jealousy. What was so special about Riverstone, the visitor thought to himself. I can laugh loud too, he thought. Maybe not as loud as Riverstone but still, pretty loud. So the visitor hatched a plan, and it was a good plan, if rather unscrupulous.
Meanwhile, Riverstone had become good friends with a young monk from a neighboring village. This boy monk knew that there would be some who would covet the love and affections Riverstone had engendered. He also knew of an obscure prophesy that a visitor would betray Riverstone in a clandestine attempt to steal his glory. The boy monk sent a private message to warn Riverstone.
THE END OF PART I " .........
hmmm....

ya know.....the mind.

it's been several days. I dont really hang out on message boards like I used to, and some of the "answers" here are why. I'm actually embarrassed that my question was used to launch playtime for you kids out there, and also sexual comments. I think I was looking for Stargazer or whatever his name is - the clearly older person who posts on here alot.
Anyway, I'm a mature person myself - and I really already had the answer when I asked - I just keep on doing the next thing to do, including meditation, prayer, learning to love without attachment. People will come when they come, not as fast and furious as when I was 25, 45, or even 55, but at exactly the right time and exactly the right place in time.
Thanks for the first few answers - -- well thanks for all of them since teh whole thread forced me to see what was already there.

PART II - Riverstone’s Revenge Disaster averted. Riverstone confronted a visitor about his betrayal before either of their reputations were irrevocably undone. The confrontation took its toll on a visitor however, he became despondent and withdrew from the villagers. There was a woman who noticed how sad and pathetic a visitors condition was and took pity on him. She followed him to the shack where he was staying on the edge of the village. She's peered into the window of the shack and watched as he swallowed OMAPs. That's how bad it was. She kept watching, there was something oddly erotic about watching him this way. After a while she could no longer control herself and walked over to the door and began knocking.
A visitor heard the knocking and immediately went to the door. “Yes,” he said after opening the door. “Hey, I know you. Didn’t I see you with Riverstone the other night?”
The woman didn't say anything, she simply walked into the shack while undressing. A visitor followed.
Meanwhile, the confrontation with a visitor also took its toll on Riverstone and he too took solace in swallowing many OMAPs. He consumed so many that his abdomen was visibly protruding. But the OMAPs changed him in more ways than was visible. A darkness came over his soul. He began thinking about a visitor and the betrayal. How could a visitor have been so selfish, he thought. He began to think much darker thoughts, too dark to mention. And when he could no longer control himself he decided that something needed to be done. No more words. Words would not accomplish anything. He had to do something, something awful.
He set out for the shack where a visitor was staying.
THE END of part II |

Riverstone looked into the window of a visitor's shack and was surprised to see the woman, naked and feeding a visitor OMAPs.
Though sick at the sight of it all, he forced himself to just stand there - watching.

yeah, she'll probably entice him, then play some silly game with him, get him drunk and the next morning he'll find himself in his underwear with his hands tied and an OMAP stuffed in his mouth like a spitted pig - oh and with a tattoo on his butt that says "MOLE HILL" |

PART IIII - Final Chapter Riverstone woke. Where am I? Who am I? What am I? I remember my sister enticing me with some silly game and drinking… oh, now, I remember. Good thing, that everything, is empty, cuz now I can pretend it didn’t happen! But I can’t get up. I’m tied up. “HELP!” “HELP!” “HELP ME PLEASE!”
Riverstone continued to yelp for help, for six hours, until finally someone heard him and came to assist the village hero. It was, yes, that’s right, you guessed it, a visitor!
“A visitor, it’s you.”
“Uh, yeah, it’s me, Riverstone. What the hell happened to you? Wait, don’t tell me, I don’t want to know.”
“I got drunk with my sis…”
“STOP,” said a visitor, cutting him off. “Let me just cut those bonds and I’ll be on my way.”
“Alright, sorry… and thanks for coming.”
“Where are you going?”
“I’m going [dramatic pause] to the village,” said a visitor.
“Why?”
“The villagers are going to drink my Kool-Aid, Jonestown style.”
“Cool,” said Riverstone. “I mean, kool, huhaha!”
“This isn’t funny.”
“Sorry.”
“There, you’re free, and I have a date with genocide!” said a visitor.
“huh?”
“Nevermind. But here, have some Kool-Aid. It’s really good.”
“Gee, thanks.”
Riverstone drank down the tall cool glass and watched a visitor walk away towards the village. A visitor’s really not such a bad sort, once you get to know him, he thought to himself.
THE END! |
