→→→→ vertical line TOPIC: PRETTY SIMPLE
vertical line Posted on Aug.28.2012 @ 03:14PM EDT by esoteric
Life is pretty simple. It's just that sometimes we make it complicated, for ourselves and for others.

Sugar is sweet, salt is salty. Pretty simple. You want to know for yourself? Put some sugar in your mouth. That's what we call sweet. Now put some salt in your mouth. That's what we call salty.

One kind of problem comes up because sugar and salt can look the same. So, you might find a glass jar filled with little white crystals and think, "Oh, that's sugar! I'll put that in my coffee!" That's not so good. I've done it before. Not only is it shocking to find that the coffee is salty instead of sweet, but it tastes pretty damned nasty. But hey! Now you know that was salt, and you can go find some sugar. You might want to take a little taste before putting it in your coffee though, just to be sure. So anyway, this is a case of the Jumping to Conclusions Problem.

Another kind of problem comes when you have two jars labeled Sugar and Salt. Only, someone else did the labeling, and apparently they didn't taste the contents before labeling them, because the jar marked Sugar turns out to be salt, and your coffee tastes nasty again. This is the Jumping to Someone Else's Conclusions Problem.

Yet another problem arises when you hear someone talking about how great their sugar is. They give it lots of mystical and magical qualities, and call it by a bunch of different names with capital letters to make it sound all Impressive. Hell, they may even tell you that sugar is the same thing as salt. Often, when this happens, it really means they only have a vague idea what sugar actually is. Maybe they tasted it once, long ago, and they're relying on a combination of memory, thinking, and some stuff they read. But the fact is, if you go and ask them for some sugar to put in your coffee, you find they don't actually have any. Or worse, they hand you something that's not sugar. This is the Someone Talking About Things They Know Very Little About Problem.

So you see how we can make these things pretty complicated, when really it's as simple as, "Sugar is sweet, salt is salty." But don't take my word for it. Go taste some for yourself. PAY ATTENTION! And be careful what you put in your coffee. :-)

vertical line Sometimes, In Zen, there is an abundance of Koans. It's as if you are in some type of ordeal but cannot see it for what it is because it simply is. So you find the right Koan for you, a story much similar to your own, and you see that this story is not so different from your own, you see the light of what is in the story, which in turn turns on the light of what is in your life. Then it's rather obvious.

It's an expression used to describe a needlessly self-destructive over-reaction to a problem. I said it jokingly because of the missing nose on your smiley face. :-)

You're from Turkey, right? I almost moved to Istanbul recently. I may still go there. I'll let you know if I do. I'd be interested in finding or starting a Zen community if I decide to live there.

There was a man in the Navy who had to give his ex-wife half of his retirement pension.

He didnt like that so he gave up the pension altogether.

Some said *he cut off his nose to spite his face* because then neither of them got the money.
