TOPIC: A MODERN MONK'S TALE |
|
|
 |
Posted on Sep.08.2012 @ 06:24PM EDT by floating_a
Reposted from genkaku's blog:
Words stick in my throat when I try to describe the power I found in "A Modern Monk's Tale" by
John Cavanagh, a former Trappist monk who tried, like so many before
and after him, to bring clerical misdeeds to his superiors' attention
... and, like so many before and after him, was told to keep his mouth
shut.
First of all, it's well written. Second it tells the tale of a person
who arose from the well-heeled realms of Roman Catholicism. Rich was
holy. Holy was rich. Third, there is little or no soap box in it -- no
wails or whines of despair ... just the story.
It twinkles in my mind like a diamond, facet after facet catching the
light of what it is to exist in a realm of power run amok. "A Modern
Monk's Tale" happens to be about Roman Catholicism.
It might as easily be about why Occupy Wall Street brought so many to their feet.

Another Monks tale:
A friend of mine checked into a Catholic Monastery, unpacked, and went to dinner.
Another monk sitting at his table was very kind and generous, filling his cup and plate while taking nothing for himself. This went on for a couple of days. He would have thanked him were it not for the vow of silence he had taken.
Then a note appeared on his door asking that he read page 8 of the Monks Handbook. There it said that a monk cannot partake of food or drink unless it is offered to him by another monk. |

Ode to the rat monk. He's a naughty little snitch! He would tattle on his own mother, or squeal on his nanny. If there were things to say he would say them, no matter the cost (to others). How can he be a rat in monks clothing??? |

Searching for a monk's handbook returns results for a player's handbook for the character of a monk. Is Zen a game that I don't know about??

Nothing there about having to wait for another monk to offer food.
But, there is plenty on how to live with lay Buddhist in a way which doesn't compromise either's choice of lifestyle. Seems to me that the eight fold path and the middle way are the real guide lines for a monk's life.

Evidently you didnt notice that every monastery makes up its own rules.
They generally reserve the right to do that,
like my parents used to say, *As long as you are living under our roof*.
Funny, when my Dad came to live with me during his final days
he still wanted to make the rules. And when I said otherwise, the told me
to go F myself. |

Okay understood, different monastery has different house rules.
The thing about people is that they get a sense of themselves by the roles they played in life. My mom and dad will always be my mom and dad. They can't be my friends. And, they will always try to show they approval or disapproval of my life. That is who they are. They learned to play those roles for a number of years. I wouldn't ask them to change. However, I would avoid seeing them too often as the visits would put me back into a role I don't want to play anymore. It is not who I am now.

Conditioning is hard to reverse, even when you know thats what it is.
I had to get back into the *son* role in order to help my Dad in his final days. But I did not like that aspect of it at all.
Still, it had to be done, and the overall event was a success as he became awakened before he died. |

Yes, we are born preconditioned to have these filters on our consciousness. When we practice, we can .. allow for a way to release these preconditions. See space between the rising and flowing of thoughts/emotions. Then choose to neither chase or reject them but to really let them go. |

No, that is why you're seeking release from a cyclic existence for yourself with a little motivation, while neglecting your fellow sentient beings. hahaha. hahaha. hahaha.

You can't help others before you have helped yourself first. And working on yourself is helping all sentient beings.

Joe Quip is an enigma.
Maybe those with the most to say are those who say the least.
Got it down closer to the common denominator than most.
Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of others?
The Shadow knows.
You say you dont know, Joe, but I believe I have met you in my meditations,
at least on a subconscious level. We dont always remember these things consciously.
Sardonic as ever, quipping as usual, thanks for your help.

Mispronouncing someone's name or misquoting someone has been a tried and true technique for pissing someone off. Unfortunately here, there is no "someone" to piss off. But, thanks, I appreciate the effort .... haha
