Camping in the forest, I noticed a bird flying in a circular pattern and calling out.  I felt that it was warning me of danger.  Mentally, I sent the message, *Show me where*.

The bird dove down, and then I heard a loud growl and it flew back up again to where it had been circling before.  My dog heard it too, braced itself, and looked at me.  I unsnapped the holster of my pistol and said to him, *We wait*. 

We were just having dinner, and the growl seemed to me about 100 meters away.  Thats approximately 100 yards for you yanks.  My dog sat down next to me and we waited for the bear to come into our camp.  We dont have Griz around here so I knew it was a black bear, weighing probably 300 to 500 pounds.  I figured my 44 magnum would do the job, but on later trips I also brought a 12 guage shotgun, just to be safer.

Each time the bird circled around it dove, and the growl kept getting closer and closer.  Then when it got to about 50 yards it started getting further away each time the bird dove on it.  When it got back to about 100 yards the bird stopped circling and flew through our camp at about 10 feet off he ground.  I said, *Thank you* as it flew by, and away.

Some people Ive told that story to have said the bird must have been protecting its nest, and I would agree, except that this happened in the Fall.  The little ones have all flown away by then.
