Why wouldnt little Alvie do his homework ?  Because the universe is expanding and one day will end, so whats the point ?  It doesnt matter.

Why didnt I do my homework ?  Because everyone got the same little diploma regardless of whether they had an A average or a D average, and I could get a D average without doing homework.  It didnt matter. (But I had a B average in college, because that did matter, or at least I thought so at the time.)

Around here there is still a lot of wilderness area.  Anyone can go there and live if they want to, if they can live off the land.  So thats about as bad as things can get.

Yet many people say they are only one or two paychecks away from being homeless, and this causes them concern.  They worry.

It doesnt matter if people talk about how it doesnt matter if people talk about how it doesnt matter.  It still doesnt matter.

During the Holocaust, some Jews went to the Ghetto as they were told, then to the rail station, the camp, and the gas chamber, just as they were told to do.  Some others escaped into the woods, and lived there until the war was over.

When I was growing up, being abused by mom and my brother, I joined boy scouts as soon as I was old enough, at ten, and by age eleven I knew I could escape into the woods and live off the land if I wanted to.  I considered it many times, but in the cost/benefit analysis of the time, I would have to give up too much to make it worthwhile.

There were things that mattered to me then.  Not sure I would make the same decision again.  Mom and my brother were brutal.  It was like living in a castle with the wicked witch and her flying monkey.  Older brothers are often mean, but not usually at the behest, and by the design, of their mothers.

But my Dad knew nothing of this, and when he was around they were on their best behavior.  So I just stayed away as much as I could except when Dad was around.  Before he died, Dad said, *I knew you were being abused, but there wasnt really anything I could do about it.*  Thats why I didnt tell him about it at the time.  He couldnt help, and they would make me pay dearly for ratting them out.

I still look back on those times with a sad and heavy heart, wishing I could go back in time and help that little boy.  But I have done what that little boy set out to do, gone out into the world on my own and have done good things.  That may be as good as it gets.

I do envy those who had a happy childhood.  For me it was somewhere in between a Turkish prison and a Nazi concentration camp.

Every island is a mountain top.  Under the sea, out of sight, is a mountain connecting it to the ocean floor, to the planet itself.  So while islands may appear separated they are actually all just part of the same thing.

So through and through means you are you, but that also you are never separate.

Which came first, the chicken or the egg, is obvious.  A chicken can exist without an egg, but an egg cannot exist without a chicken.  So the chicken came before the egg.  How that came about in evolution, who cares ?  Not my problem.

Who you are is just a part of Things as It is.  A small, very small, component.

So just be who you are, where you are, doing what you are doing,

and be content with that, or you could end up driving yourself nuts

trying to be someone or something that you are not.
