The way toward liberation is to train yourself to live in the present
without wanting to become anything. Give up becoming this or that,
live without cravings, and experience... continue...

82.   Nothing Exists

Yamaoka Tesshu, as a young student of Zen, visited one master after another. He called upon Dokuon of Shokoku.

Desiring to show his attainment, he said: "The mind, Buddha, and sentient beings, after all, do not exist. The true nature of phenomena is emptiness. There is no relaization, no delusion, no sage, no mediocrity. There is no giving and nothing to be received."

Dokuon, who was smoking quietly, said nothing. Suddenly he whacked Yamaoka with his bamboo pipe. This made the youth quite angry.

"If nothing exists," inquired Dokuon, "where did this anger come from?"

So what do you think..?

Nothing is one of an infinite number of possibilities that could exist at any given point in time.

What is that which can be anything ?

What is its nature ?  What is its essence ?

Nothing in particular.  Nothingness.

Of course things and phenomena exist – other people etc aren’t pure figments of my imagination, though maybe some are. It's just that they don't exist from their own side - they're not inherent. I know because I’ve read all the books ha.

The student was so full of his own philosophical profundity and cleverness that he needed a reality check – and he got it – a good ‘empty’ smack on the head – take that!  Does that exist ?  The master’s anger wasn’t real either.

So, do I get a pat on the back or a smack on the head?  Don’t hit me too hard, my head is all too real  :)

No, no, it is a translation of ...
"If nothing exists," inquired Dokuon, "where did this anger come from?"

Stop being so full of yourself and show me the truth of your nature

You take it the wrong way. As always, you think of yourself at the center of the universe

You are too scattered to stay on topic

Correction:  It's the master's anger that didn't exist. I misread the passage.

"

I guess it's a smack on the head then.

vertical line For some reason I came to think of this story long ago about this plopp box maker that went around looking for work.
Asking every ship at the harbour, he finally came across this captain that after careful consideration came to the conclusion that, yes, a plopp box maker could come in handy and welcomed him onboard.
The plopp box maker immediately set about his task of making plopp boxes, one after another, and the captain was very pleased with the new found plopp box maker.

But after weeks on the sea the captain started to get worried. The plopp box maker had done a good job indeed, working tirelessly from day to night making plopp boxes the whole journey, and good craftsmanship too. But now it was no more room in the cargo bay. And that meant no room for any of the merchandises they were supposed to bring back, so action had to be taken.

He approached the plopp box maker and told him.

"Hey, don't get me wrong, I think you have done a good job and all, but these  plopp boxes gotta go. You have filled up all our cargo space with them so I am afraid we have to throw them away before we reach land"

The plopp box maker looked at the captain with a look of utter dismay and disgust.

"No way! I have toiled and worked very hard on these plopp boxes, no way I`ll let you just throw them away! Over my dead body!"

The captain looked helplessly.

"But please understand, we have all this cargo to pick up, so I have to get rid of the plopp boxes since they take up all our space, I`m sorry but we  have no choice so.."

The plopp box maker cut him off.

"From my cold dead hand!"

The discussion continued with the captain begging and crying for throwing the plopp boxes, but regardless what he said the plopp box maker stubbornly refused. Even threatening suicide as the captain tried to reach a compromise of at least throwing away  half the plopp boxes.

But then, at last, after many hours of discussion the plopp box maker finally agreed. They could throw away One plopp box, but no more than that one!

So they both went up on deck, and with eyes filled with tears the plopp box maker watched the plopp box go overboard.
