vertical line I'd say you're a square Zennist as Alan Watts defined it. 

If Zen is the transmission outside the scriptures, then it should be impossible to be a fundamentalist Zen practitioner. 

I guess by fundamentalist I meant dogmatic, prescriptive, traditional and rigid about what Zen is and how it's to be practised.

Well like in the Catholic church. Those who form their separate church and preach the same things as the catholic church are call fundamentalist.. It seems they are offspring of the church.

a fundamentalist is trying too hard

if someone were as you suggest a zennist then they would have no concept of fundamentalism, in its basic adherence to tenets, fundamentalism is extremist -with some exceptions.

zen might be considered all inclusive, with exception being the rule
