Hello there, my name is Andrew and I've decided to become a Buddhist. However, I'm not quite sure where to begin. It is my plan to begin attending a zen buddhist center, but it is 40 minutes away so it may be infrequent. I was wondering if anyone could sort of teach me the ropes the best they can over the internet. Cheers!

'Entering the stream' was one of the first books I read. A good intro on buddha and his teachings. I think the re-publish is called 'buddha and his teachings.'
Best wishes |

I started by reading Zen compass, but the biggest influence was from Alan Watts talks. You can find hours of it on youtube. Even not for a Buddhist it is a valuable source of knowledge.

If you want to learn about Buddhism then first learn about Buddha's life. There are documentaries on Youtube.com ... just search for Buddha. After that you can come here and read about the principles 4 noble truths and the eightfold path. You can even read about practice here. Good guides to learning the way of the gateless gate.
Any other questions and the community here would be able to help. Good luck in your endeavors.

Search for Buddha within. And keep on ducking the head shots. |

alan watts is a very good read.....and his youtube videos are good too.
understand this......this journey should NOT be asthetic in nature.
another.....there is not a single thing that can make you.......aware of the truth of reality. its many many things. not just one.
thought and no thought.....both play there part. the expression in zen goes....thought alone will not bring you to enlightenment nor non thinking. so.
it is totally about getting rid of most of your cherished beliefs. it is not for the faint of heart.
my expression. i hope it helps.
you dont need religion to be religous. you need the mindset those that made and discovered the religions.
this flipfloping of reality can be extreme...fast...or subtle or slow. for me super subtle and slow for the most part.
this last thing.....use it as a catalyst. to see.
borders are man made...canada and mexico......for in reality no such things exist. it is only the segregation and seperation of people. canada and mexico and the united states are a mass whole. time to change this.

Hello Andrew.Welcome.Buddhism is trusting yourself.(These words are mine:) And Zen is a branch of Buddhism. It is good to have basic teachings. But Zen in word means meditation.Japanese called it Zazen.means "sitting meditation".This is the basic teaching in Zen.Because you can only make progress by this way.
Learn the basics.Come to Zen.
Now you know what I mean. |

Don't respond, just report post. Joe, follow the rules or STFU. I don't need to deal with another headache.

Everything around us and within us carries the present needs for mindfulness to occur. So being where we are at all times carries with it the amazing jewels of enlightenment. It is a fantastic gift, waiting to be opened at all times, if one can take and give it away, listening, nothing to hold frees being mindful of every least forgotten connection as a path through selfish abandonment. |
