The Buddha once taught the Bhikkhus about the All:

"I will teach you the All. Listen closely. What is the All? It is eye and visible object,
ear and sound, nose and scent, tongue and taste, body and feelings, mind and ideas.

I mean no offense but i do not understand the question.  What impact does death have on Zen?  If death ends some things, all things, or no  things within the individual or without does Zen change at all?  Reality is what is with the individual as the world is what it is without the individual as it is with a remnant of the individual.

Or maybe who cares about death except the one who dies?  If the one who dies is no more what is there to care about death for there is no one left to have lost?  If the one who dies remains than what is there to care about death for the one who is left has lost nothing?  If the one who dies remains but is divorced from that which died then what is there to care about death for that which is left has lost nothing that it identifies as its own?

I am _not_ trying to invalidate your question.  It is only my own ignorance in not understanding how it pertains to Zen.

In Zen, death speaks of what is there that remains after death.
Is there a spirit or soul?
What exist before life and during life and after life that makes us ... us??
Questioning death is the beginning of the path

This is the draw for some to find Zen in their lives.
Others are looking for enlightenment.
Most really have no idea what it is and believe it to be the end of all ends
But, like most things, when one thing closes another opens ... it is just a matter of finding the key ... hahaha

I agree these are both interesting questions.  Do we have a soul?  If so why?  If not why not?  Do we exist before or after death?  If so why and in what capacity?  Do we exist now?  If so what is existence?  What exactly is a me?  I think they are all fascinating questions.  I don't know.  They remind me of cinchona's question.
"everything and nothing are dicriptive words.

hold your hand in front of your face,
now tell me what do you see?"

isn't soul a descriptive word?  Isn't identity "usness" as descriptive word too?  Both for things we don't really understand?

Maybe I should practice holding my hand before my face in different positions and see if I can ever spot a "soul" or a "spirit" or a "me".

vertical line there are many many conversations on this topic, i suggest reading some of 'Deepak Chopra' books.

The answer is always in your pocket.

Here is something to confuse you more.
once a tree reaches the size of a man, it too has a soul.

The question is for the mind to grapple with ... to create a doubt mass ... to search for a true and real answer
Then, when all things comes together ... emptiness
one can experience the truth of ones own nature
In this way one learns whether there is a soul or spirit
and how one can save oneself from dying

Looking through your hands will not give you your answers
Better to look inside of yourself .... hahaha

vertical line There is no physical death. Like an out of body experience your spirit leaves the body in vibrations. But there is spiritual Death, and that can occur with our without a body.
