One day a Vinaya master asked a Zen master:
-How should one practice Tao?
The Zen master replied:
-Eat when you are hungry, sleep when you are tired.
The Vinaya master said:
-Most people do that.
The Zen master... continue...

vertical line mud contains trace elements nutrients and by virtue of it being mud, moisture. also a substrate to root into.

gold has none of these things,

i like the comparison,

Some good things grow down there: carrots, potatoes, turnips, beets, peanuts.

But it's the flowers that grow above ground, and lift themselves up to the sun.

vertical line The mud from whence the lotus blooms,
Hardly as the mind assumes.
Such beauty springs from deep below,
From foul beginnings, flowers grow.

vertical line When in the dirt, just be in the dirt. When in the sky, just be in the sky.

When you don't have to be in the dirt or in the sky any more, you can still see earth and sky.
