SUIWO AND THE SOUND OF ONE HAND CLAPPING
Suiwo, the disciple of Hakuin, was a good teacher. On a certain day a certain pupil came to him, and Suiwo gave him the problem, "Hear the sound of one hand."

The pupil remained three years, but could not pass the test. One night he came to Suiwo in tears. "I must return to my home in shame," he said, "for I cannot solve the problem."

"Wait another week," said Suiwo. "Meditate constantly." Still no enlightenment came to the pupil. "Try for another week," said Suiwo. The pupil obeyed, but to no avail.

"Still another week," requested Suiwo, but in vain. In despair the pupil begged to be released, but Suiwo asked for one more meditation of five days. They too were without result. Then Suiwo said: "Mediate for three days longer. If you still fail to attain enlightenment, you had better kill yourself."

On the second day the pupil was enlightened.

Suiwo

"Hear the sound of one hand"

Isn't this very close(smilar) to my Following White Method.

If you kill yourself, how could you ever hear that one hand clapping?

But if you are still here, you will never hear that one hand.

What a bind for the mind.

Only a mind can bind.

No mind, no bind.

But all is mind.

Do you not know?

vertical line The internet bears a superficial relevance where ideas and people remain unmet and disconnected most the time. Forums, Information pages, banking sites, email, business programs, social media are convenient ways to get a point across and send a message but looking into a heart and having an open ear for those dear to you cannot be replaced through the internet. Saying hello to a neighbor or thanking the garbage man exceeds the whole virtual internet world by infinity to none.

vertical line One hand reaches out for contact to form itself against another, yet this time the listening begins before the sound of forming against another is not heard and reaching up, out, and being are heard in subtle softness which gives value to each effort that brought one here into the now, one hand silently reaches out is all being.

vertical line The sound of one hand clapping is one of the most talked about koans in Zen Forums..lol.. But I don't think no one in Zen Forums know it..  they are just fun in talking about it as if they got it... They cannot figure it out that is why they like to be talking about it.. hoping someone could give some words as clue to it...

The Sound of one hand clapping is just one of the miscellaneous koans. The koan is not even a full koan as the ones in the gateless gate... So it is comparatively easier than the main koans.

But I don't think anyone in Zen Forums can solve it...lol..

vertical line Did you know that Koans are not to be solved??
They are to be used as a tool to create a huge doubt mass in the mind.
And upon the correct timing, the mental release of such a doubt mass can bring about the experience of awakening.

And Koans can not be answered on the internet or forums.
Dokusan is necessary ...

vertical line No, the koan is used to create the doubt mass in the mind.
Dokusan is meeting with the teacher to gauge the progress.
When the effort and doubt reach critical mass, it's release can bring about the experience of awakening.

vertical line Do koans even serve purpose in today's world?  I mean, if you know the whole purpose of a koan is to create doubt, then you know before even starting the kaon that you will never get it.

But before the internet you did not know this and though it could be solved.  So then you would genuinly reach enlightenment

.........

Understanding is just based on what others have said
But also upon what you have experience and can comprehend from your experiences.
Not every who experiences Kensho will understand what it means.
Some have experienced it and turn their backs to the possibilities.

You think yourself right all the time and therefore there is no room to learn and understand the truth.
So even if you had an awakening experience, you would turn your back on it.

Koans do have an answer.
And you can "get it"
It takes a lot of determination and right effort.
