One day Yao-shan Wei-yen (750-834), one of the well-known Chinese Ch'an master, was asked by the host of the monastery to give his sermon to the assembly who for a long while was expecting his teaching. Yao-shan said: "Strike the bell."
I went into a 24 hour Starbucks around 2 am in the morning. Asked for a free bag green tea from the guy. "We don't give out free drinks, he said" I took my free ice water and left. The dumb Zen in me expects the tea to be always ready. I think, that's the rule. The tea is always ready. But not for free, not today. Oh well, the next day I bought a green tea latte and was on my way. Who cares.
