The Chinese Ch'an master Yao-shan wrote the word "Buddha," and asked Tao-wu Yuan-chih (768-835), one of his successors: -What is that word? Tao-wu answered: -It is the word "Buddha". Yao-shan said: -You monk talkative. Another monk then asked: -I am not clear, please teach me. Yao-shan kept silent for a little while then said: -It is not hard for me to tell you some words today, but it would be better if you immediately realize it yourself. If you keep thinking about it, then it will be my fault. This is not as good as if everyone keeps his mouth shut in order to not get involved.
