When Yang-shan Hui-chi (807-883), as a young monk, paid a visit to the Ch'an master Hsing-k'ung, there was a monk who asked Hsing-k'ung:
-What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?
WHO AM I?
Another day, in the back yard of the Zen teacher's monastery, another learner asked him:
-Master, I would like to know who I am. -What for is it to know something like that? -Please teach me. -Do you see the oak tree over there? He asked back while looking at the tree. -Yes, I do. -It got the answer, go and ask it.
