One day, Chang-sha Ching-tsen (d. 868), one of the well-known Chinese Ch'an masters, wandered in the mountain. When he was back just at the gate of the temple, the head monk asked him:
-Where have you been, Sir?
HOT OR COLD
When it's hot or cold, one's body feels hot or cold, and it needs to undressing some clothes to cool itself down or putting on some more clothes to warm itself up, that is its intelligence.
When one's mind or soul gets hurt and it looks for some place that, it thinks, would be neither hot nor cold to abide, this is its ignorance. And with this action of looking for a place like that, it is going into one more layer of ignorance.
What is the mind's or soul's intelligence?
CT: When it suddenly realizes that looking for something like that is its ignorance and stops looking for it, at that moment, that's is its intelligence.
