Summary Editorial Reviews Book Description The Bible is the most important book in the history of Western civilization, and also the most difficult to interpret. It has been the vehicle of continual conflict, with every interpretation reflecting passionately-held views that have affected not merely religion, but politics, art, and even science. This unique edition offers an exciting new approach to the most influential of all English biblical texts--the Authorized King James Version, complete with the Apocrypha. Its wide-ranging Introduction and the substantial notes to each book of the Bible guide the reader through the labyrinth of literary, textual, and theological issues, using the most up-to-date scholarship to demonstrate how and why the Bible has affected the literature, art and general culture of the English-speaking world.

Summary Editorial Reviews Book Description This exciting new parallel text resource features eight translations of the New Testament which are highly regarded in the evangelical community today. With the exception of the classic King James Version, all of the translations included in this volume have been published - and sometimes even revised - within just the last quarter century by groups which have a strong evangelical outlook. The texts are arranged to permit easy comparison of the word choices made and translation practices employed by the scholarly teams responsible for rendering the Greek New Testament into modern English. Such a parallel text layout is invaluable to those engaged in individual research or who are Bible study group participants. Readers will appreciate the inclusion in this volume of such very recently published translations as The Message and the New Living Translation. Especially noteworthy is the fact that the New International Version and the New King James Version appear together for the very first time in The Contemporary Parallel New Testament.

53. CHRISTIAN BIBLE: THE JERUSALEM BIBLE: READER'S EDITON
by Alexander Jones (editor)
Publisher: Doubleday Publishing (ISBN #: 0385499183, Hardcover, 1696 pages, February 2000)

Summary FROM THE PUBLISHER When it comes to Bible translations, readability and reliability are what count; and on both counts, the original JERUSALEM BIBLE stands alone. A product of the age of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), THE JERUSALEM BIBLE (published in 1966) was the first truly modern Bible for Catholics. Using definitive original language texts such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, biblical scholars of L'École Biblique in Jerusalem produced a meticulously accurate, wonderfully readable French translation of the complete canon of Scripture (La Bible de Jérusalem). From this French original came the English edition, edited by renowned Bible scholar Alexander Jones. For all the people around the world who are discovering or revisiting the mysteries contained in the Scriptures, only a clear, understandable Bible translation will do. With language as exquisite but more modern than the King James Version, THE JERUSALEM BIBLE is the one they can trust.

Summary Why Protestants and Catholics Should Read It, June 16, 2000 Reviewer: "pauletha2" (Georgia, USA) This Bible should be read by Catholic and Protestant Christians. It is simple to read, plenty of background information in the footnotes. It explains the word definitions in both the Hebrew and Greek definitions. Also, how a word or words could have lost its meaning in the midst of translating from the original language into English. Again Catholic and Protestant Christians can read this Bible with confidence.

Summary Editorial Reviews Book Description After "Heaven and Hell," "Divine Love and Wisdom" and "Divine Providence" are arguably Swedenborg’s two most popular works. In "Divine Love and Wisdom," Swedenborg reaches out to the secular mind with a vision of order and beauty pregnant with meaning and direction and appeals to human experience and reflection (rather than scriptural interpretation) in making the case for the presence of God’s love and God’s wisdom. It is not just that there is a purpose underlying creation; it is that we share in that purpose and are essential to its fulfillment. From God’s infinite love and wisdom to our own individual desires and perceptions, there is an underlying unity on which we can rely.

Summary Editorial Reviews Book Description After "Heaven and Hell," "Divine Love and Wisdom" and "Divine Providence" are arguably Swedenborg’s two most popular works. In "Divine Providence," the sequel to "Divine Love and Wisdom," the focus is directed toward earth, at a world so troubled that the loving hand of God is often hidden from our sight and brought into question. How can we believe in the goodness and power of God when we constantly see injustice and war? The answers that are offered turn us toward a deeper understanding of our own human nature and process. Only divine love and wisdom can provide us with the accountability that gives meaning to our lives.

Summary Keith (Keith@Keithscafe.com), Chemistry grad student in SLC, February 1, 2001, Clothes in Heaven Swedenborg was a Swedish scientist who began to have almost daily contact with angels who gave him tours of heaven and hell. He wrote numerous volumes, this being a great one to start with. He describes what he saw in both heaven and hell and describes them often in great detail. He describes not only the clothes that angels wear, but also time, space, children.... I really enjoyed his descriptions of death and the different stages one progresses through. Another major concept described in detail in this book is correspondences. This is a great translation although I believe the Swedenborg Foundation is about to come out with a newer Dole translation.
