A monk came to say good bye to Ch'an master Niaowo (Bird's Nest). He said:

show chinese | 五祖曰、路逢達道人、不將語默對、且道、將甚麼對。
Goso said, "When you meet a man of the Way on the path, do not meet him with words or in silence. Tell me, how will you meet him?"
Mumon's Comment 無門曰、
若向者裏對得親切、不妨慶快。
In such a case, if you can manage an intimate meeting with him it will certainly be gratifying. 其或未然、也須一切處著眼。
But if you cannot, you must be watchful in every way.
Mumon's Verse頌曰
路逢達道人
不將語默對
攔腮劈面拳
直下會便會.
Meeting a man of the Way on the road,
Meet him with neither words nor silence.
